Less than two months before its worldwide release, Square Enix has announced a delay for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Instead of March 3rd, it will now release on April 10th for the PS4. Producer Yoshinori Kitase explained that the delay was for additional time to apply “final polish” and deliver the “best possible experience”.

“We know that so many of you are looking forward to the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and have been waiting patiently to experience what we have been working on. In order to ensure we deliver a game that is in-line with our vision, and the quality that our fans who have been waiting for deserve, we have decided to move the release date to April 10, 2020.

“We are making this tough decision in order to give ourselves a few extra weeks to apply final polish to the game and to deliver you with the best possible experience. I, on behalf of the whole team, want to apologize to everyone, as I know this means waiting for the game just a little bit longer.” Kitase then thanked fans for their continued support.

Though this delay is sudden, especially when it seemed to be smooth sailing for the remake, it’s not unreasonable. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the first part in a saga of games and contains tons of new content. This includes new minigames, interactions, plot points, and so on. That’s not even taking into account the high graphical fidelity, combat and other gameplay features that need to be rigorously tested before launch.

However, this does put the title in a rather awkward spot. DOOM Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are out on March 20th. Resident Evil 3, itself a remake of the PS One classic, arrives on April 3rd while Cyberpunk 2077 is out on April 16th. Then again, this is one of the most anticipated remakes of all time we’re talking about so it’ll likely be fine. Stay tuned for more details on the title, including the potential release of the demo, in the coming months.
