Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Will Also be Exclusive to PlayStation [UPDATE]

Sony's exclusivity deal with Square Enix encompasses the entire Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, to no one's surprise.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

UPDATE: The Washington Post’s Gene Park, the author of the article, has clarified on Twitter that the entirety of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is “not yet confirmed to be Sony exclusive.”

Original story follows:

Four years on from its launch, Final Fantasy 7 Remake remains a PlayStation console exclusive, and last week, its sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth also launched as an exclusive for PS5. Unsurprisingly, it’s been reported by The Washington Post that the entire remake trilogy is going to be exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

As per The Washington Post’s piece, PlayStation’s vice president of second and third party content, Christian Svensson, described securing exclusivity for the remake trilogy as a “feather in the cap” for PlayStation, especially considering the importance of Final Fantasy as a franchise to PlayStation as a brand.

“Back in that same console generation for the original PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment had few franchises of its own, and in order to find its place in a very competitive video game industry, we sought to win the hearts and minds of key third-party developers like Square,” Svensson said. “[Third party partnerships are] ingrained in our DNA to this day and connect directly to how we’ve worked together on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.”

Final Fantasy 7 Remake did, of course, end up releasing for PC in 2021, though an Xbox version of the game has remained elusive. Meanwhile, Rebirth’s PS5 exclusivity window is set to end on May 29, but it remains to be seen how long it’ll be before it comes to PC. Whether any of them will be releasing for Xbox anytime soon (or ever) is anyone’s best guess.

Last year’s Final Fantasy 16 also released exclusively for PS5, but a PC version is currently in development, while reports have claimed that it’s headed to Xbox Series X/S as well.

Of course, how long it’ll be before Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s sequel releases is the big question right now. If it ends up releasing four or five years from now, there’s a good chance that it’s a PS6 game, not a PS5 one. Either way, work on the final instalment in the trilogy is already underway.
