In the lead-up to Gears of War: E-Day’s recent announcement, there were some rumblings about the technical leaps that developer The Coalition was looking to make with the game, having shifted to Unreal Engine 5 for the newest entry’s development. And though the game’s announcement trailer didn’t show any gameplay, it was rendered entirely in-engine by Blur Studios using in-game assets provided by The Coalition, and it looked quite impressive.

In a post published on Xbox Wire, The Coalition has provided yet more details on some of the technical and graphical advancements we can expect to see with Gears of War: E-Day, which, according to studio technical director Kate Rayner, is going to boast “over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5″.

Specifically, Rayner says the game will feature hardware raytraced lighting, reflections, and shadows, next-gen destruction and gore tech, new animation technology, and plenty else that, according to her, will “make Gears of War: E-Day an unrivalled visual experience”.

“Our ambition is to, once again, set a new standard in technical excellence,” Rayner said. “We have fully modernized Gears from the ground up, infusing the DNA of Gears with the full capabilities of modern gaming technology. Every character, environment, and animation in Gears of War: E-Day has been completely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, allowing us to portray the Gears universe with unprecedented detail and fidelity.”

Microsoft and The Coalition have also emphasized that Gears of War: E-Day is not a spinoff, and will “shape the future” of the franchise in spite of being set fourteen years before the first game. The game is also confirmed to be entirely linear.

Gears of War: E-Day is in development for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
