With the recent new trailer that Capcom released for upcoming title Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the company also inadvertently revealed that the protagonist’s likeness the depiction of legendary Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi by actor Toshiro Mifune, as caught by GamesRadar.

For context, Mifune has appeared in several classic Akira Kurosawa movies, including seminal works like Rashomon and Yojimbo. The depiction of Miyamoto Musashi by Mifune comes from Hiroshi Inagaki’s trilogy of movies.

While Mifune did lend his likeness to the character in the classic movies as wellas in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, he won’t be providing the voice since he passed away back in 1997 at the age of 77.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword was first unveiled back in December during The Game Awards with a trailer. The announcement was a return to the long-dormant Onimusha franchise that only recently showed signs of life thanks to a remaster of the original Onimusha, along with an anime adaptation.

The trailer gave us a brief look at what Onimusha: Way of the Sword will look like, along with short, quick glimpses at some combat. Following series tradition, the new title will also take place in a classical Japanese setting, and will involve players taking on hordes of demons in intense melee combat.

The more recent trailer, which gave us a good look at Miyamoto Musashi as the protagonist, also revealed that he gets tied up with the Oni Gauntlet in some way. It also showcased a grim take on the Japanese setting, where players will have to take on plenty of Genma in methodical melee combat.

Despite the more serious things shown in the trailer, however, it looks like there will also be a bit of comedy to help lighten the mood, such as when Musashi has to start running when there are too many enemies to face, despite his arrogance that he can take on any challenges.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is slated for a 2026 launch, and is in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A remaster of the second game in the franchise, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, is also on the way, slated for a May 23 release on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
