Shadow of the Tomb Raider got off to a slow start in terms of sales, by Square Enix’s own admission, in spite of some pretty solid reviews, but it seems the game has definitely done pretty well in the long term. The action adventure title had managed to sell 4.12 million units by the end of 2018, and the developers, Eidos Montreal, seem to be pleased with how it has performed by every metric.

“We’re super happy with how Shadow of the Tomb Raider turned out, both on the critics side and performance,” said producer Jonathan Dahan while speaking with US Gamer. “That’s why we continued producing DLC, because we’re excited about how it went.”

In fact, Shadow of the Tomb Raider has performed well enough, both critically and commercially, to secure the future of the franchise, with Dahan suggesting that it’d be very surprising if Square Enix were not to go ahead with sequels going forward, contrary to what many might have assumed.

“I’d be extremely surprised if we didn’t see more of it,” said Dahan. “We’re not able to say anything about what’s happening next, but I’d be very surprised if we didn’t hear more about the franchise.”

Eidos Montreal have indeed been supporting Shadow of the Tomb Raider with a steady stream of content since its launch, as Dahan mentioned, which has, in all likeliness, driven up interest in the game. The fact that it managed to sell pretty well in spite of a slow start would also suggest that strong word of mouth also helped with the game’s commercial performance.

In our review of the game, we called it “an expertly-crafted adventure”, while praising it’s storytelling, characters, combat, and visuals, and awarded it an impressive score of 9/10. Read our full review through here.
