Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Almost Had “Buddy Boost” Feature

Players would have had the ability to boost up others, but this was eventually cut.

Apparently before it was revealed, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was set to have something called a “Buddy Boost”. This would let a player squat down so that their friends could climb on top and get to higher places. Such a technique can be seen in professional Counter-Strike: GO play.

However, as multiplayer map design director Jeffrey Smith told Prima Games, it was ultimately cut. “It’s really hard to get some random person to cooperate with you. You have to let somebody kind of climb up you and get you up and they would get up there.” Of course, in a game like Call of Duty, it also didn’t help that the person crouching was left vulnerable.

Because the system didn’t work out, maps were actually re-designed to be more interactive. Despite recent footage that showcased Rainbow Six Siege-esque peeking and more tactical gameplay, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is still Call of Duty. So it makes sense that random players would be more focused on running and gunning.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases on October 25th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The beta will be going live in September, first for pre-orders on PS4 and then a week later for pre-orders on Xbox One and PC.
