Grand Theft Auto 6 – Former Rockstar Developer Believes No More Trailers Should be Released

The former Rockstar North developer also revealed some details behind the making of PS3 and Xbox 360 classic Grand Theft Auto 4.

A former Rockstar Games developer believes that the studio shouldn’t release any more trailers for the highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.

In a series of posts on social media platform X celebrating the 17th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto 4‘s Xbox 360 and PS3 release, former technical director for Rockstar North, Obbe Vermeij, posted that there is enough hype for GTA 6 that the game doesn’t need any more marketing.

“If it was my call I wouldn’t release any additional trailers,” posted Vermeij. “There is more than enough hype around VI and the element of surprise is going to make the release only bigger as an event.”

It is worth noting that Vermeij definitely has a point when it comes to the anticipation behind Grand Theft Auto 6. The title has been earmarked by publisher Take-Two Interactive as potentially having an impact even on console hardware sales when it finally comes out.

When it comes to GTA 4 itself, Vermeij also revealed that the decision to remove quite a few features from its preceding title, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, was made in order to get GTA 4 running well on the consoles of the time. Some of the features removed included multiple cities, underwater swimming, bicycles, and even the RPG-styled stats.

“To focus on making the game truly next-gen, we dropped many game features from San Andreas,” he explained. “Stats (fitness, weight), Multiple cities, Stealth, Underwater swimming, Jet packs, Tanks, Bicycles, Monster trucks, Car modding, Planes…”

“The missions were designed to suit the story. Previously it had mostly been the other way around.”

Vermeij also revealed that the Xbox 360 served as the lead platform for Grand Theft Auto 4 during development owing to the difficulties posed by the PS3’s Cell architecture.

Coming back to Grand Theft Auto 6, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had revealed back in March that the company’s marketing push for GTA 6 would begin closer to its release window. In an interview, Zelnick also noted that the anticipation for GTA 6 “may be the greatest anticipation I’ve ever seen for an entertainment property.”

“And…we want to maintain the anticipation and the excitement,” he said. “And we do have competitors who will describe their release schedule years in advance. We found that the better thing to do is to provide marketing materials relatively close to the release window in order to create that excitement on the one hand and balance the excitement with unmet anticipation. We don’t always get it exactly right, but that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Zelnick also revealed back in February that he believes that the release of GTA 6 will end up causing a “meaningful uptick” in console hardware sales. “I don’t think tariffs are going to be our friend, but I think there will be a meaningful uptick in console sales in calendar 25 because of the release schedule, not just coming from us, but coming from others,” he said.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is in development for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. While no release date has been announced so far, the game is reportedly slated for a Fall 2025 release window. There is currently no word yet on when a PC version of GTA 6 will be released.
